Delivering smiles to the disaster-affected areas!
[Smile Again] Project.

Through recreation volunteer programs, National Recreation Association of Japan aims to take physiological and physical care of those affected by Great East Japan Earthquake, and to bring people closer together.
We also intend to run recreational programs of physical activity and sports for children.

Since the establishment of National Recreation Association of Japan (NRAJ) in 1947, we have been working hard to create a better environment that promotes enriching lifestyle for people.
We have been working with regional groups active in the field of recreation, sports and outdoors to promote various recreational projects. We also work together with universities to nurture leaders for such projects.

NRAJ falls under the category of "publicly funded nonprofit organization", an organization that is certified by the Cabinet Office.

Since the end of April, Miyako recreation association has been visiting evacuation centers and elementary schools for recreation volunteering. Some of the volunteers had their houses damaged and their recreation volunteer equipment swept away by the tsunami.

On this day, students of recreation studies from Sendai University also took part in the program. Taking over from the local recreation association staff, the students conducted fitness exercises for the evacuees. Mr. Hidekazu Hiratsuka, the president of Onagawa board of education said "The government must focus on matters like reconstruction and restoration of lives, so it's important for volunteer organization to support physical and emotional wellbeing of the people".

On an April morning, children with nervous look their faces gathered in the oval of Akahama Elementary school. Here, the school Gymnasium has become an evacuation center. The town of Otsuchi was literally engulfed by the Tsunami and Akahama Elementary school lies right in the middle of the disaster zone....

Recreation volunteers have begun to take action in areas affected by Great East Japan Earthquake.

The Miyagi Recreation Association has started volunteering at the evacuation center in Ayukawa district of Ishinomaki City. Despite sustaining enormous damage by tsunami, flow of aid and assistance to Ayukawa district has been very slow as it's located at tip of Oshika Peninsula....
